Francis Marshall Durham. Circa 1770, moon-phases with tidal indicator.

£1,200.00

A good George III 8-day longcase clock dating to around 1770 with moon-phases and tidal/ high water indicator. Well proportioned oak case with medullary figuring. Fully working/ cleaned/serviced.

Francis Marshall is listed as working in Durham between 1770 and 1795. From its features this clock dates to the earlier part of this period. The brass dial has joined minute ring, the centre is engraved with seconds and date calibration plus additional Georgian foliate patterns. Typically for the period the original steel hands are not matched, the minute hand being of serpentine form with the hour hand more complex. The arch shows moon-phases and high water by way of a painted and engraved/ silvered moon disk.

The oak case is solidly built with good proportions and ‘flat-top’ design. The front panels have good medullary figuring. The original seatboard has an older stapled repair which is still sound and solid.

The movement is of 8-day, 2-train format and typically well made for the period. It has been cleaned and serviced and works reliably.

The clock is complete with brass-faced pendulum, lead weights, winder and trunk door key (the lock is not original but in good working order).

Overall height is 87 inches, width at base 20 inches and depth 10 inches.
